He arrived in Mesa, Arizona, on Tuesday, January 29, 2019, here is an excerpt of what he said happened that day.....
We had a good flight, we grabbed our stuff and unloaded, when we went to baggage, our Mission President was there to meet us! He was really nice and walked with our travel groups to baggage claim, we got our stuff and talked with the mission President while we were grabbing our luggage. We then walked out of the airport to load our luggage on a trailer. Then we loaded up and headed to Mesa, Mesa is not far at all from Phoenix! On the way to the church we stopped at a Mesa mural and took pictures! I think they sent all of you pictures, it is also probably on Facebook.
After pictures we headed to a church to sign in and fill out some paperwork, they gave us Visa waiters loaner phones (for free) and pillows and blankets. We then had some really good pizza for dinner, then our new companions came there and we got assigned our companions! It was so exciting!
My companion is Elder Asay! He is from Colorado and enjoys sports, the outdoors, and biking! We then got a ride to our apartment to drop my luggage off. Instead of just unpacking we went out proselyting! I got to meet some Hispanic people and oh my! They talk so fast compared to the MTC!
I didn't really understand any Spanish while proselyting but I tried my very best! We then headed back to our apartment to unpack, I got unpacked, wrote in my journal, and then headed to bed.
This first day in the field was so crazy and so long but very fun! My area is a biking area! It is a relatively small area but it is full of Spanish speakers! My area is called "Guerrero Park."
I went shopping with my companion, some kind elders picked us up and took us to a small Walmart to shop, while we were at the self checkout, in the middle of checking out, a lady approached us to pay for our groceries. I got to talking to her and her son is serving in Quito Ecuador right now! He leaves in August so I may be able to meet him before he leaves if I get my visa. She goes to the Lehi Stake here. Her son is in Ecuador!
Another cool experience he shared was meeting a man in the family history center that has ancestors from the area we currently live in!
He shared many other amazing things like free french toast on p-day at a local restaurant, a lady that makes scripture covers for everyone, a family that opens their home for the missionaries to come and play ping pong:)
This week has been crazy! I am slowly starting to understand Mexican Spanish and am learning more Spanish every day, the mission President told us that the Visa waiters will probably be here for a couple months! I'm fine with it though there are tons of Spanish speakers here, so I will have a chance to learn a lot of Spanish because most of the Spanish speakers also know a little English so they help me. It is really hard to understand people but my companion has been very helpful.
We had a meeting today (Friday) about car and bicycle safety. For lunch we ate at a place called Orchard Eats! They have food half off for missionaries! I got a bbq burger with fries.
He sounds wonderful! I can't wait to hear from him next week! Please contact me if you want his new mailing address.
